The Law of Attraction

If you are expecting a peach Blossom story, I’m sorry to have to disappoint you. :-) Actually this title was given to me by someone who had requested a reading quite recently. To ensure privacy, I’m going to generalize the specifics but highlight the key points.

I can personally relate to this particular case because of my strong interest in creative output, in my case Music. If I still remember right, I didn’t exactly have the blessings of my family to pursue music, even though the support came via tuition money etc. I guess their concern was genuine; they didn’t know if I could make a living from the career choice. I did pursue it ultimately, got my degree in Piano Performance and then decided I did not want to teach for a living. Anyway, the next write up was about this young gentleman in the mid 20’s who wanted to pursue a life in entertainment but concerned because many had advised him otherwise.

It’s very difficult to feel ‘in sync’ when you don’t go with the flow. Imagine, trying to walk against the powerful current of a stream you are trying to cross. And usually, when we are moving in the same direction with the flow of things, everything feels good. This was the case with this young man. Let’s call him the Joker!

This is Joker’s chart.

A strong Ying earth person usually denotes a determined, sometimes stubborn character, but definitely can take hardship. He has a Direct Resource structure, which tells me his interest in knowledge. In the day branch is Direct Wealth and this is penetrating to the heaven. For a strong daymaster, he has the capability to make money. The next obvious question is career choice.

Joker had told me, that he had always wanted to be a celebrity since young. This type of ‘recognition’ is associated to the hurting officer star. It is present in the month pillar branch, although it is a secondary qi.

The other thing I noted that the Yi wood, representing 7K is rooted in the hour branch and again penetrating the year stem. This guy is determine to do what he wants to do, so trying to change his mind is going to be difficult. Even though, we know logically, it may be a difficult career as very few actually make it successfully ultimately. I then asked myself, maybe I was a little too myopic in my views of possible ‘successful’ careers, and the definition of success. What is success? Maybe I needed to look a little deeper and relate it to the ‘environment’ and whether it the career choice was supported.

Looking a little further, the luck pillar tells me of relationships that want something from him. Essentially these are the robwealths! The robwealth are also bearers of money (in the year pillar) as well as fame and recognition (in the luck pillar). Hmmm I wonder if the robwealths were his agents or managers that look for jobs for him. That was verified.

You can’t put on a show, if you don’t have fans, right! Fans can be again represented by the robwealth (as they want something from Joker) and that’s present in the natal chart. But it can also be represented by the Friends he has this year, indicating plenty of support for this career that he had embarked upon. He was going with the flow. He had all the supporting elements and he was just doing was supported in the chart, essentially his ‘law of attraction.’ And this made him happy.

I guess the power of Bazi is to also be able to look ahead, and see if the elements that are supporting him right now will continue to be there in the future. This is especially important, if the elements are NOT in the natal chart but passing through the luck or annual pillars. In Joker’s case, he needed to be aware that he may not be able to pursue this line forever and prepare himself to evolve.

Why are Feng Shui or Bazi masters old?

Ok, better clarify before I get bombarded by nasty emails or comments! Yup, there’s the new generation of Chinese Metaphysics consultants like Joey Yap that are relatively younger and don’t appear in long white robes or spot long beards. But in the past, this profession is usually dominated by the ‘wise older generation.’

I’m reading a book by Malcolm Gladwell entitled ‘Outliers’ now. The book is on his research to why successful people are successful. There’s an interesting point that I want to apply this observation to.

There’s a chapter in the book with a very interesting title – the 10,000 hours rule. It basically says that to be able to master a certain skill, whether it is the violin, composition, software development, sports, music, whatever, you need to put in 10,000 hours (of practice) first. He then goes on to give examples of folks like Bill Joy (inventor of Java and one of the founder of SUN Microsystem), Bill Gates of Microsoft, The Beatles, Mozart etc.

As a music student before, I know for a fact, that without the time (effort not enough) put in, you are not going to be no virtuoso. Probably that’s why music students (good ones) almost have no life. I was doing 2-3 hours of practice a day (sometimes), compared to some of my friends that were doing 6 hours daily on top of classes they were attending. Crazy! Luckily I fell in love with the MAC computer, and decided that I could not never be a great pianist!

Now I’m into Bazi, and started relatively older (I’m 42 this year), let’s see how long it’ll take for me to put in 10,000 hours. I do about 3 email requests a week on the average, each email takes me roughly 20 minutes to respond. It’s not so much the writing time, but also the time required to think. Usually per requests may be up to 3 emails threads (except for this crazy Romanian guy who doesn’t know when to quit!) So, that is about 1 hour per request, or 12 hours per month. Assuming I write to my blog twice a month and it takes me about 2 hours per article (sometimes longer), I’m up to 16 hours. I read other blogs, forums and books on this topic, and probably do another 3 hours a week, so that another 12 hours for the grand total of 28 hours a month. For simplicity sake let’s take 25 hours a month. (This is on top of my 40 plus hour weeks doing my current job)

In conclusion, to achieve 10,000 hours, I need 400 months or 33.33 years of practice. I’ll have this mastered by the time I’m 75 provided I’m still around! Time to put on the thinking cap on how to speed this process up, or I’ll be spotting that long white robe not to mentioned no hair by the time I get this mastered! That’s why they invented the computer and the Internet, right?

The Hurting Officer - countering with Human Effort

I recently read Guan Leong's 10 Gods' book and I thought the 'sequencing' structure was interesting. I believe by reading, learning, and applying from others is one way we can advance our knowledge.

What I will do next (may not be in sequence) is to share how human effort can affect the outcome of a bazi chart. I'm doing this from pure observation and after all, human effort is the other 33% that always gets left out when we do a Bazi analysis. Never under estimate the power of 'just doing it.'

There's a book called Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell that basically researches on the why successful people are who there are today. One of the things that he mentioned was the fact that they actually go through many many hours of doing what they do (that made them successful), very early on in life, and then when the opportunity arises, they are able to take advantage of it. I truly believe in this. The effort spent during the 'not so good' period, will be realised when the 'timing' is right. Pretty much the same principle as the flywheel concept in Jim Collin's book.

Let's look at the Hurting Officer and how through human effort, we can minimise the effect with the 'boss star' or the direct officer element.

I've had enough experience running my company to tell you that some people with prominent hurting officers in their charts are very prone to quitting and my partners cannot understand why I 'suck' up to their demands. I believe that a knowledge base organisation is very dependent on people. No people, no business! So, I do everything to ensure that they stay with the company as long as possible. However, there are some people who are just perceptually wanting to leave, sometimes, for stupid reasons. (I can take logical reasons like financial, self advancement, but I've heard really stupid reasons that makes we reconsider the effort I take for trying to keep the individual at the company)

Here is an example of a female staff (not from my company) of a friend that I was advising. He had mentioned that because he wanted to keep the relationship professional he decided that he had to 'behave' more like her boss. That's when all the troubles started. I asked him, how did he 'behave' before? He had mentioned to me that she always saw him as a stepping stone to higher position. In my mind, she saw him as her Robwealth. He was concerned also, that their relationship may be interpreted wrongly by others, as they were seen as 'a couple' by their peers!

Interesting enough, on probing further, she was also currently having some problems with her husband (also considered her Direct Officer). My interpretation based on her chart was that the Hurting Officer is rather prominent in 2009 (pure earth, and Ji earth represents the Hurting Officer). She was also in the luck pillar that the hurting officer was present. Coupled by the fact that the HO is NOT a fav elements as it weakens fire, something that a weak fire daymaster wants to have! I'm also quite convinced that the harm and clash formation between the Ox (year) and Goat (luck pillar) and the Horse (day branch) has got an effect to the current issues that she is facing.

Also, if you see note the day branch, you'll see the ever important (and wanted fire) RobWealth in the spouse palace. As long as my friend behaved like the RobWealth, she'll look up to him. The day he decides to become the direct officer (Gui Water), her hurting officer comes into action.

So you see, just through relationships (human behavior), you can change the negative affects of the element. My last check with him, confirms it. (Only worrying part is she is now calling him 'dear'!)

Earth, Fire and Wood - Battle for Deputy President

There’s been quite a few ‘surveys’ done by different media groups on who will win the upcoming key political party elections for the deputy president position. Let me also put in my perspective based on Bazi to forecast who might win.

The 3 candidates’ charts are as follows:

The Ji Earth candidate

The Bing Fire candidate, and

The Jia wood candidate.

I would look at a few aspects of the candidates’ bazi charts, compare it to the year and month of elections and with my limited interpretations of the bazi, try and predict the outcome. Once again, let me put up my usual disclaimer of been apolitical in nature, I do not know any of the candidates, and I do not have verifications of their birth data (as well as their birth time).

Let’s start with Mr. Ji Earth candidate. He unlike the two other candidates is STRONG Ji earth as he is born in the summer goat month. (Fire is the resource of earth). Furthermore, he has internal support from the main qi of his month branch. Ji earth people are nurturers, hardy, thinkers and contemplators, usually have got hidden thoughts and agendas. The one aspect/characteristic of strong daymaster, is when an opportunity arises, they tend to have the ability to be able to take it on, e.g. making money. The opposite is also true. When luck is against the strong daymaster, it usually turns out quite bad. God is fair! His chart looks a little wet (though not cold, as Goat belongs to the summer months). I would think that Bing fire would be one of his important elements as well as Jia wood. Overall, I say quite a strong candidate.

However…

He is in the luck pillar of Ding Chou (Fire Ox). And Ox clash with the Goat, and both the OX and GOAT represents his support, which in an election is probably one of the most important factor in determining victory. Let’s test this further. The one incident in the past that had lead to his resignation from leadership was when he was detained in a neighboring country for not declaring the money that he had with him, which I believe he was acquitted later on. That year was a Ding Chou year (FIRE OX) year. BTW the following year from that incident was a Wu Yin year or Earth Tiger. Earth represent support and the wood in tiger represents power. Maybe he got support from powerful people to get him out of that predicament. To go even further, 2009 is year of Ji Chou. Ji earth may represent support, but the OX is still something that he does not like to see.

The second candidate is Mr. Bing Fire. Cheerful disposition, the usual characteristic of a Bing fire person, magnified by the fact that he has a Ren water beside him. (Think of the sun reflecting on the ocean). Brings warm to people, are usually natural leaders. Even more important especially in this wet earth year. As he is born in Monkey or metal month, he does not possess a strong daymaster. I do not see the support from the branches of the year, month and day pillar but support maybe present in the hour pillar. Again, from a bazi perspective, it’s important to see a chart that is not too weak, it is very unlikely to see candidates seize the opportunities when it arises.

Mr Bing fire is in his Bing Yin luck pillar. Bing obviously is important as it represents support and in the tiger you have wood or indirect resources. This tiger clashes with the monkey (his month branch) which is his indirect wealth element. This could mean during this 54 luck pillar, his ideas may caused him to loose money, but gain power (7K) and support (F). Not too bad. But more important, the Tiger and Dog (his day branch) pushes up the horse (ding fire) which could represent the people who support him for self interest purposes (not uncommon in the political scenario). These are the unseen people that is backing Mr. Bing. (One interesting note – our current PM is a ding fire person)

2009 is Ji Earth, representing the hurting officer. While the hurting officer seeks the acknowledgement for the work that he has done or is doing, it is also the element that muddies the water element, representing the power and authority. Ji Chou is also present in his chart in the year pillar. This formation is called a Fu-Yin. This may get a little confusing but one way of interpreting Fu Yin’s is ‘you have arrived.’ (Imagine seeing a mirror image of yourself appear). As it affects the year pillar, there’s 2 possibilities – one is ‘the time has come’ for him to shine. The other that people close to him (not him) – their time has come! In Joey’s classes it is usually not depicted as a happy event (but a crying event), but many have disagreed with this analysis. My personal read is he sees victory for someone else that he knows (that is not too close to him) and the event may not be necessarily something that he likes.

As far as the months are concern, March is Fire Rabbit and April is Earth Dragon. I took this two months as the elections are targeted to be held end of March and we can also see the after effects of the election (month of April). While the Rabbit forms a combo formation with the DOG creating more fire, representing support, the dragon clashes with the dog and forms a destruction formation with the ox (of his year pillar as well as the year itself). My personal interpretation is too many clashes, harms, combo’s etc. results in things not going as plan.

UPDATE (March 17): Mr. Bing Fire just got barred from contesting in the coming elections for his agents (I presume people that work for him) involvements in money politics. Hmmm Is this the Fu-Yin? or maybe the Dog Dragon clash affecting his eating gods. Eating Gods can also represent the person's staff.

The final candidate is Mr. Jia wood. Again, support does not seem to be present his chart, but possibly could be present in the hour pillar. Born in the snake month of fire, his daymaster is definitely not strong. The first thing that you notice about this candidate he has just moved to his new luck pillar of Wu Xu or Earth Dog. Usually things when a person moves or approaches a new luck pillar, there’s always changed in the air, could be good or bad. The strange aspect of his chart, is the power element is missing (once again, it be in the hour pillar). The other thing is the hurting officer element is present in the day branch as well as the year stem. The Jia wood person is usually tall, proud, stubborn, and in this case, seeks the attention and acknowledgement for the work that he does. The hurting officer is also an element that hurts the direct officer – representing either power or his boss. That has happened a few months back when he had become very outspoken against some of the current PM asking him to step down earlier.

The Dog in his new luck pillar also combines with the horse, pushing up the tiger representing support! Suddenly Mr. Jia wood’s support has gotten stronger in 2009. The one thing that stands out is he is in money for the next 10 years. 2009 represents lots of wealth, too, if he is strong enough to take it on.

The OX harms the Horse (in the day branch), which can be a good thing, as it could put out the very fire that hurts power! Strangely, the interaction of the fire rabbit and earth dragon months may also work for him. Firstly, the dragon clashes with the dog, bringing out the power (DO) and fame (HO). The Rabbit and Horse forms a destruction formation but again it affects the Hurting officer as well as the Robwealth element. This may result in support from grassroots as well as the ones currently in power. Lastly, from pure observations, I have never seen a poor successful politician. Mr Jia wood is in the money period, and will be for the next 10 years. Though he might have to watch out in 2010 as his support may try to chop him down! (Geng Jia or Metal Wood).

Based on my analysis, I think Mr. Jia wood would win the position in the upcoming elections but Mr. Bing would be quite close behind.

Earth, Metal and Water - Battle for no 1 position

It’s been a while since my last update. But as I tell my friends, I’ve got to make hay while the sun shines! (Especially in a pure earth year – read my previous articles, and you know where I’m coming from).

Since this is March already, and we know that the Umno elections (March 24-28) is coming up, I thought it’ll be interesting to start analyzing the upcoming candidates and forecast how well they may do in the elections.

I’m going to start with Umno Youth. 3 candidates vying for the head honcho posts.

First you have a prominent young Xin Metal politician. I’ve featured him before. Then you have a Yang Wu Earth personality, son of a very prominent politician. Then you have the Yang Ren Water politician who lost his leadership position (as well as the state government) in the recent general elections.

As usual, I do not have their birth times, and I have no way to verify the accuracy of the candidates birth dates. This obviously will affect the accuracy of the interpretations but let me state my position – I’m quite apolitical, but have a great interest in Bazi and how it can be applied to character profiling as well as luck cycles.

Here are the charts of 3 of the candidates.

In the study of the 10 Gods (elemental relationships), power is usually represented by the Direct Officer as well as 7 Killings (I read this in Master Guan Leong’s latest book on the 10 Gods). It is the element that controls the daymaster.

All 3 candidates have that element but the Xin metal’s one is most interesting as it is hidden. Obviously in an election, I believe that power will play a prominent role, so we will pay close attention to this particular relationship.

The next is support. Support is represented by ‘friends’ and ‘rob wealth.’

All 3 candidates once again have that prominent element in their charts. In the Ren water politician, you could probably interpret his support as ‘tit for tat.’ His supporters want him for something. Obviously, been in an influential position will also ensure opportunities can come your way!

I also believe that daymaster strength is a very important consideration. It is very unlikely that a extremely weak daymaster can ‘control’ or ‘command’ the opportunities or challenges that he may face.

The Ren water candidate is born in summer, so he is not strong but supported by robwealth. I don’t necessarily interpret this as been strong or extremely weak, but his strength come from the 7K at the branch of his day pillar. Think of water in rapids (large rocks). When the season is right, it can become strong.

The Xin metal politician is born in winter, so he is weak. However, he is supported by another Xin metal in the spouse palace, signifying the importance of the spouse to him.

The Wu earth politician is supported by more Wu earth in the year pillar. This could possibly be interpreted as ‘general support’ and the 7K in the year stem could also be seen as general support from people who are already in power.

Next is to look at the 10 years luck pillar. This is to determine does the candidate have got ‘big’ luck on their side.

The Wu candidate is in Geng Chen (Metal Earth) luck pillar. The Chen signifying more support. The Geng metal probably representing the ability to ‘cut down’ or control power (or other politicians).

The Ren water candidate is in Ji Mao luck pillar. Ji represents power and Mao represents Yi wood or the hurting officer. This does not necessarily support the Ren water candidate as Ji earth tends to ‘muddy’ ren water and the Yi wood further weakens Ren water. Weak water wants to be strengthened by more water or resource.

The Xin metal candidate is in Yi You (wood metal) luck pillar. Wood representing indirect wealth, and you represents friends or support. This could possibly mean he has support friends with money. For a weak daymaster, the rooster luck pillar is important to him and will bring him the much needed support.

On note here. The Xin metal’s chart is very clear (look at his branch and stem). This guy knows what he wants, probably has his goals set and how he intends to achieve his goals already predetermined.

Lastly is to look at the date of the elections. 24 to 28 March 2009 and how it affects the candidates . March is Ding Mao – Fire Wood month. I’m going to just go with the months as there a 5 days and there’s just too many probabilities to consider. However, as it coming to the end of that month, we’ll look at the following month of Wu Chen (Earth Dragon) and see how it supports the candidates. Let’s look at these dates and how it affects the 3 candidates.

For the Wu earth candidate – Mao doesn’t clash/harm or destruct with anything in his chart (at least not as first glance) Mao also combine with the pig and the horse is implied. The main element of the horse is fire. An important element for the this candidate (as fire creates earth). Wu Chen also means the candidate will have more support. Don’t forget, 2009 is a pure earth year. This candidate has support. I believe these are good dates for the Wu earth candidate.

As for the Ren water candidate, the Ding Mao month is not so ideal as wood from the Rabbit (Mao) actually weakens the already weak water. As for the Wu Chen month, it’ll only be good for him if he has the strength to make use of the aggressiveness and power opportunities he sees. 2009 is a pure earth years. Problem with pure ying earth is it actually contaminates the water. I don’t think these 2 months is in favor of the Ren candidate.

The Xin metal candidate is full of innovative ideas in 2009, represented by the Ji Chou. However, the Rabbit month may not be so great for him as Mao (Rabbit) actually clashes with Rooster (in his luck pillar and day pillar), which is his important element of support is present. Also, the following month of Dragon forms a punishment formation with the OX. (Not certain, must refer to my books) But if you ask me this doesn’t go down well with the Xin candidate either.

So based on my very ‘superficial’ and ‘high level’ analysis, I think the Wu candidate will be victorious. Let’s wait and see what happens.
